From the Artist

I design and create to discover— to fully observe, explore, and connect with the world. I particularly like finding beauty in ordinary subjects. I am excited when I find “the common” has been elevated to the uncommon by some act of light, atmosphere or perspective. I am attracted to all themes but especially those that convey a sense of mystery or reminiscence. My goal is to capture intimate and familiar images with simplicity and directness, and to awaken personal memories in my viewer. I now work in several mediums on metal substrates. I specialize in small to medium sized works to fill spaces in vanities, foyers, halls and libraries.

My main interest is in creating copper wall hangings with etched and flame worked squares and creating images on aluminum and copper with colored pencil. My current work also includes other mediums using metal as a substrate. All aspects of my work are hand done by me, including handmade images used on the copper, copper links and rivets, and decorative hanging components. My goal this year is to add enamel to these hangings.

About the Artist

Sarah Sheffield started her professional life in social services but soon switched to arts and arts administration. Having grown up around design (an architect grandfather, an art teacher mother and industrial designer father), she develop an art portfolio and opened a free-lance graphic arts business and taught art in public facilities. She was soon hired as a permanent arts instructor in the Raleigh (NC) municipal system. Her career shifted into full time arts administration and she eventually became the Cultural Arts Supervisor for the Town of Cary (NC), where she designed and coordinated arts staff and programs, concerts and exhibits for two public arts centers. Following retirement from that position, she returned to oil painting. Following an invitation to participate in the Cameron Art Museum Art of Illumination lantern exhibit where she was challenged to bring together her experience in several mediums, she moved away from solely oil painting to more multimedia work in metal.

Originally from Detroit, she has traveled throughout the US and internationally to western and eastern Europe. She is now happily settled in Wilmington, her husband’s hometown, and active in the arts community.

She's been fortunate to study in workshops with nationally recognized Impressionist artists and contemporary jewelers. She is a member of the Wilmington NC Art Association, Urban Sketchers of Wilmington NC, PaintNC (plein air/outdoor), American Impressionism Society, Oil Painters of America and Women Painters of the Southeast. She has an undergraduate degree in cultural anthropology and graduate degree in public administration.
